We are about to launch the final part in our “On the Right Derech” series. Derech eretz finds its basis in the Aseres HaDibros, regarding the honor and respect that are due our parents and our Torah teachers. However, what about the rest of the world? We can make a kiddush Hashem every time we meet or greet anyone. In this section of hilchos derech eretz we will learn about the basic courtesy that should be extended to everyone we meet.

Why do people forget to say “thank you”?
Rav Yitzchok Hutner ztz”l explained that in Hebrew the word (and therefore the idea) for “thank” has the same root as the word “admit.” When we say “thank you” to Hashem in our tefillos we “admit” that we are receiving something that we really do not deserve and we thank Him.
However nobody wants to feel that way towards another person so we “conveniently” forget to say “thank you.”
