Rabbi Yehuda Spritzer of Chabad in Monroe Township, New Jersey, visits and encourages Jews behind bars. In this interview, we find out what out what his job entails.
MJ: Hi Rabbi Spritzer. How did you become a prison chaplain?
RS: I started as a volunteer. When a position opened for a state-employed chaplain in New Jersey State Prison a 25-minute drive from my house I applied and was hired. I’m there for all the prisoners although I focus primarily on the Yidden. I visit on Mondays and Thursdays for eight hours per day. There are non-Jewish chaplains on the other days. I daven with the prisoners put tefillin on them and give shiurim. My job is to make sure they have what they’re entitled to according to the Right of Religion. I make sure Jewish objects are available for them.
