Cereal boxes often promise us prizes INSIDE the box, but did you know that the box itself is a type of prize? If you’ve ever collected box tops for your school, I bet you do! Trading in box tops for money has raised over $475 million for schools since 1996. Let’s learn more about this amazing program… you’ll never look at a cereal box the same way again!
First things first: You can actually find participating box tops on lots more packages than cereal!
General Mills (the cereal company that makes Cheerios and Chex) started Box Tops for Education in 1996 and by now over 200 other products like Kleenex Avery Hefty Ziploc and some Nestlé items have joined in as well as stores like Costco and Target.
School in Action
-Bais Yaakov of Baltimore (BYB) has collected $10000 over the past 5 years. PTA cohead Esti Froelich says “The school encourages students to participate by offering prizes: We have a thermometer in each class to track progress!” BYB uses the money for school trips and special projects.
-The Lakewood Cheder offers soda ice cream and popcorn and uses the money earned for extracurricular activities and Rosh Chodesh treats.
