Craft: Apple Art

One of the most popular Rosh HaShanah simanim is the apple dipped in honey. All it takes to elevate that siman to magnificence is a touch of the extraordinary. This elegant food art will greatly enhance your Rosh Hashanah table – and what could be more befitting for the monumental days when we proclaim Hashem our King?

Note: In order to prevent the apple slices from discoloring splash lemon juice on the sides of the slices right after you cut them.

Flower Apple

The thin artfully placed apple slices and the contrast between the deep rich color of the peel and the paler more delicate flesh create a spectacular appearance. Getting this design right may look complicated but once you learn the basic technique you should be able to create a variety of shapes.

Directions

1. Using a sharp knife cut a small narrow slice from the top of a large red apple. (It may be easier if you first use a pen to gently mark lines which will serve as cutting guides.) Remove the slice and place it on the side.
2. Cut a second slice 2 mm around the first one. Remove it and place it on the side as well. In the same manner cut a third slice around the second one. If the apple is large and deep enough you may be able to cut out another round.
3. Gently insert the slices back into the apple. The moisture of the apple will help them stick.
4. Pull out the slices slightly from the body of the apple. The smallest slice should protrude the most.
5. Repeat about 5 times around the apple depending on the size.
