Madame Chamberlaine and The Tissue Paper Mummy

Madame Chamberlaine was visiting again, but instead of enjoying her, I jumped every time someone spoke too loud. I shivered every time I heard whispers and freaked out every time I heard a window slam. You see, in the last three weeks, there were seven robberies on our street! Creepy, isn’t it? So I’m sure you don’t blame me for feeling nervous.

What would I do if a thief came into my home while everyone was asleep? What would I do if I was the only one home and he came then? What would you do? What would Madame Chamberlaine do? I asked her. She laughed her voice like bells in the room. “Chérie I will worry about it when it happens.” “Really Madame ” I begged. “You laugh but I don’t think it’s funny.” “Oh ma petite! Me neither. I just daven that Hashem shouldn’t send me any robbers. And if He does then I daven that He should help me.” That didn’t help me much. Because boy was I davening! Problem is we don’t always know what’s best for us. So I sat on the couch chewing my nails off and cowering at the tiniest creak coming from the basement.
