I turned and started walking slowly in the opposite direction, resisting a desperate urge to run, so the dog wouldn’t run after me on my way up.

There were no upstairs neighbors. Of course! I was already on the top floor! There was only one other apartment on that floor. The Grossmans. I knocked and rang rang and knocked but once more I found myself outside a closed door. Maybe the dog had gone away. I peered hopefully over the railing. No it was still there squatting peacefully near the bottom step. Had it fallen asleep? Gingerly I put one foot on the top step. Immediately the dog raised its head and let out a bark. My heart pounded wildly. No! I couldn’t do this. I’d just wait here on the top floor until Bubby got back or until the Grossmans got back or until the dog went away.
