A Midnight Adventure

“Passports? Visas?” the Canadian Border Services officer demanded, beaming a flashlight through the car window as he peered at me and Sruli, the older boy driving me back to yeshivah. After more than five hours of driving, we’d finally arrived at the Canadian border, and it was time to show our documents.

Why does this part always make me nervous? It’s not like I did anything wrong. Something about the official process and the stern looks on the officers’ faces always makes my stomach launch into acrobatic stunts. Oh well I consoled myself. It will be over soon and then we’ll be on our way. “Step out of the car son ” the officer commanded. Huh? What did I do? Stunned I froze in my seat unable to move. He reached forward and opened my door. “I said ” he repeated his voice louder and more menacing “get out of the car. Now!”
