Feathers here, feathers there, feathers everywhere! From peacocks to pigeons, owls to ospreys, and swans to sparrows, birds decorate our planet with a marvelous array of hues and shades, all displayed in their most prominent feature, feathers.
Did you know that the same bird depending on when you spot it can be two completely different colors? Birds have a beautiful collection of feathers called plumage. Once a year they molt which means they shed their plumage for a new coat much the way we humans lose our baby teeth to make room for our grown-up ones. During these molts damaged or lost feathers are replaced giving the bird a fresh look for the new season.
