Building to Remember

Since ancient times, people have been building memorials, statues, and other structures to remember the great heroes and events of the past. Some of these still stand and are among the most famous sights in the world. Memorials are still built today, but there have been a few changes.

The ancient Romans loved to build. They built roads palaces arenas and bathhouses most for practical purposes. But they also made statues to glorify their emperors and idols. For example theEmperorTrajan’s Column built to celebrate the emperor’s war victories. It’s 125 feet of marble and weighs over 600 tons. The Romans liked building big. However the Romans also liked to destroy and were proud of that too. The Arch of Titus inRome was named for the EmperorTitus and was built from 81 to 85 CE afterTitus conquered Yerushalayim and destroyed theBeisHamikdash. Inscribed on the arch are scenes of a Menorah and trumpets spoils from theBeisHamikdash being carried off byRoman soldiers.
