What is a Trade Union?

Whether you call it a trade union (UK) labour union (Canada) or a labor union (US) unions are organizations of workers who have joined together to protect their rights. Those rights could be to a decent wage decent working conditions shorter hours or benefits. Unions can be made up of all the workers in a particular industry such as airline workers or all the workers for one company. Employers know that if they don’t listen to union demands they could have a strike on their hands.
