Your backpack is filled with crisp books and sharpened pencils. You might not be ready for the summer to end, but your air conditioned classroom and new books are a luxury some kids can only dream of. Let’s peek into some schools around the world.
Boat School
In Bangladesh heavy rains flooded and destroyed many schools. How were kids going to learn without schools? In 2002 the first school boat was opened. The boats have flat bottoms so they can glide through shallow water and over flooded land. Six days a week the boat stops at different villages along the shore and picks up 30-35 kids. Once everyone’s on board the lessons begin. They learn math reading writing English Bengali about the environment and conservation. Then the boat returns the students to the riverbank and the boat goes on up the stream to pick up another set of students for another 3 hour lesson. Now there are 90 boats that travel along a 250 kilometer stretch of rivers and streams.
