Surprise!

Scientists have been studying surprise. They watched people and wrote down their reactions when surprised. What do you think they saw? Raised eyebrows? Right. Wide-open eyes? Right. Jaws dropping? Right again. You need a scientific study to tell you this? Well they did discover something you might not have guessed: that facial expression isn’t necessarily connected with the actual experience of surprise. Meaning just because a person doesn’t look surprised doesn’t mean he or she isn’t. Some people show their emotions less than others. So if you go to all the trouble of throwing a surprise party for someone and they don’t look so surprised it’s okay. They’re probably so surprised inside that their outside hasn’t caught up with it yet.
