Court Secrets — Chapter 58

On Motzaei Shabbos, after Havdalah, the Rebbe returned to his private study. The Rebbetzin immediately informed him that a well-known askan in the medical field wished to see him for a few minutes.

“Fine,” the Rebbe agreed, “but he will have to wait. First, I must speak with Leiby, and that will take some time.”

Once again, Leiby was summoned to the inner sanctum, the Rebbe’s seforim shtub. He entered with the now-familiar mixture of awe and thirst, wondering what awaited him this time.

Seforim covered the table before the Rebbe, some neatly stacked, others lying where they had been studied and set down during the long hours of Shabbos afternoon. The Rebbe sat in his armchair, smiling broadly. The Rebbetzin was the only other person permitted to remain; she sat in the shadows behind her husband.
