Speak Up: School Uniforms?

My school has uniforms but during senior year we get to wear our own clothes which I think is a really smart idea. I like wearing a uniform right now because I don’t have to worry about competition but I’m looking forward to the privilege of being a uniform-free senior! During senior year the girls get to really understand how to dress appropriately and b’tzniyus while still under the guidance of our teachers and mechanchos.

I’ve been wearing uniforms for at least half my life and I still appreciate it every time I put on my button-down shirt and wool skirt. A uniform definitely fosters equality; it limits my judgment of other people. Appearance has a lot to do with how people judge others so if everyone comes to school wearing almost the exact same outfit what do you have left to judge? The actual person. You‘re listening to her not making assumptions about her because of her shirt. You’re more likely to approach her because you aren’t thinking She’s not my type.

Compared to camp or vacation when everyone lets their colors shine the start of school feels so drab. I try to spice up my boring uniform with pins hair accessories jewelry scarves and cute socks or shoes. Some people think it’s because I want attention or to stand out but really color makes me smile and I wish we had more freedom to express ourselves in school.
