The Garden Gang Fights Back

Daisy opened her eyes and looked around the garden. She was the only one awake. “I’ll go for a walk,” she thought, “before anyone else gets up.” Lupin was snoring gently, his tall stem drooping in his sleep, while Rose and her sisters had closed their petals delicately around themselves. All was quiet in the garden — but not for long.

Daisy hearing the commotion went over to help but she had not even reached the vegetable patch when she heard Lettuce cry out in alarm and point towards the garden fence.

In the gloom of the night all Daisy could see at first were eight eyes looming out of the gloom. From over the fence four hungry slugs appeared searching for a meal their rapacious rasping echoing through the quiet of the garden. The lettuce seedlings tried to dig themselves into the earth while their frantic mother shook with fear.
